Olha o passo do Elefantinho / Here comes the Elephant

And there we were in a really nice safari afternoon, stopped in the middle of a dry season African Savannah at Kruger Park, just observing possible trails that could lead us to the encounter of some other  magnificent animal, when, unpretentiously, a lonely elephant appeared, far far distant away coming from behind the trees.

That was a moment of total excitement and surprise, as we were not expecting to meet an lonely elephant that particular way. Suddenly, and very slowly, there he came into our direction.

The experienced ranger moved the jeep out of the track and parked it in a way that the rear of the car was aiming the track where the elephant was walking on.

So, there he came walking, walking... and he was getting close... and even closer, until a moment we, inside the jeep (we were four people) started looking at each other with those frightening/surprised type of look, and it could not be different. The elephant was coming into us, without showing any "intention" of changing his direction (and the ranger without showing any attempt of moving us away from there as well).

And he came the closest possible... bumped his legs on the back of the car, smoothly shaking it. At this right moment, the lady in the jeep thought of screaming and very quickly the ranger said: "please, stay quite. You don´t want to see this elephant turn this car upside down, do you?".

Deep silence and panic, for sure!!!

But, it was only that. A light scare!

The sympathetic elephant passed us by and continued his lonely walk, maybe thinking about life, and there he went.

There was another jeep in front of him which decided to move before the elephant arrived closer. It would be better not take the risk, after all we had already stayed on his way!

Johannesburg

- Museu do Apartheid

Old Fort

Museu do Apartheid

Johannesburg is a synonym of Nelson Mandela. It´s impressive the "presence" of the great South African leader in many different locations in the city, such as Nelson Mandela Square, a commercial and restaurants centre or Nelson Mandela Bridge.

Nelson Mandela was one of the Robben Island Prison inmates who became  President of South Africa, as it also happened to Kglamea Motlanthe and Jacob Zuma.

And it could not be different. In Johannesburg we may find the most important references about Nelson Mandela himself and about the terrible Apartheid regime which was in course in South Africa from 1948 to 1994:

- Nelson Mandela Houses - in Soweto and where he lived his last days.
- Desmond Tutu House - also in Soweto.
- Apartheid Museum
- Hector Pieterson Memorial - Soweto uprising memorial.

I did not have many references on Apartheid, however this trip sparked my interest in knowing more about the theme and, as it also happens with The Second World War, this subject grabbed my attention.

It´s sad to go deep in this theme, but really important to understand it.

We decided to hire a local tour guide called Ruben, a Mozambican who has been living in Johannesburg for more than 10 years. Funny guy who made the whole day tour a very pleasant day.

Old Fort
We visited Old Fort Prison, a prison built in 1890´s which became a fort to protect the city against the British invasion. Many prisoners from the invasion period stayed there, nevertheless, it was transformed into a prison for common criminals as well as political prisoners (more focused on the latter after 1948 with Apartheid regime).

Important to mention that although black and whites were inmates in this prison, they´ve received different treatment. As an example, the whites used to receive two meals a day, however for the blacks it was three meals a week.

As one of those "irony", today the Old Fort is the Constitutional Court with some walls done with bricks removed from the old jail.

Commercial Centre
We visited Joburg Commercial Centre. A modern and dynamic region in the city, like the ones we find in many big cities in the world, and where we see Bank or Mining Companies headquarters such as BHP or Anglo American.

Nelson Mandela Last House
We visited the neighbourhood where the house in which Mandela lived before passing away.

Apartheid Museum
We could not miss visiting Apartheid Museum. One of those touristic points "full" of emotions, history and reflections.
Since at the entrance they intend to show reference of Apartheid regime. At the ticket office, the attendant ask which "colour" ticket we want: for the "white" or "black" and the gates is also separated for each of the tickets.
This separation is just illustrative, but it carries a strong symbolic effect of one of those saddest and shameful moments in history.

And that day was finished visiting Soweto and the most important historical references: Hector Pieterson memorial with the emblematic photograph of Mbuyisa Makhubo the student carrying Hector in his arms after being shot during Soweto Uprising in 1976.
And also Nelson Mandela childhood house and Desmond Tutu´s.

The dinner was at Remos Libertà. An Italian restaurant at Nelson Mandela Square with a fair approach and price. Great decoration, good music, good wine options (although it was missing Pinotage) and the view of Nelson Mandela Square at night.

The menu was Macaroni with cream cheese, bacon and tomato and pizza prosciutto and arugula with cheese.

Os últimos cliques em Cape Town / the last pictures of Cape Town

Our last day in Cape Town was dedicated to visit the city centre, the Castle of Good Hope and to buy some souvenirs.

and in the entrance of the castle, this Beatle!
The first stop was at Castle of Good Hope.
Built between 1666 and 1679, the Castle was, in fact, a fort in the beginning to protect Cape Town from English invasion during a war with the Dutch.

This is considered the oldest surviving building in South Africa.

It´s worth visiting the Castle of Good Hope for its cultural value and some of its details, such as William Fehr Collection, however the construction demands some repair (which is not perceived by the pictures).

As we were at the city centre we decided to visit a craft-souvenirs fair, but it was not interesting on options nor prices, by the way (Watershed located at Waterfront offers much more interesting options and more attractive prices).

We haven´t had the chance and time to visit the wineries of South Africa, however our farewell dinner was at 96 Winery Road in Stellenbosch, so at least we put our feet on that region and had the chance to enjoy an excellent wine (Lyngrove Pinotage).

By the way, it was not only the wine which was excellent that night. The menu was delicious and was one of the best:
- lamb with lentil
- roasted pork fillet with risotto.

Simply divine!

There is no doubt that we will return to Cape Town to visit its wineries. This quick visit to Stellenbosch bolster our curiosity.

Além do Cabo da Boa Esperança / Beyond Cape of Good Hope

This day tour was coming to the end and to finish it we went to Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, an impressive botanical garden with a lush nature.

The environment is even more attractive and compelling as it is surrounded by the mountains of Table Mountain.

We just felt sorry for arriving so late at Kirstenbosch (one hour prior to closing time) and we did not have time to walk around the whole park. But, for sure we indicate you to visit it.

Our dinner that night was at Meloncino, an Italian restaurant located in Waterfront. Nice place, funny waiter (Richard). We ordered a pizza, good one by the way, but the wine was not that good, but it was a good way to finish that long and pleasant day.
